报告题目:Temperature and Outdoor Productivity: Evidence from Professional Soccer Player
报告语言:中文
报告摘要:We estimate the causal effects of ambient temperature on outdoor productivity in a flourishing sport industry. From 2014 to 2018, we use a unique data on the universe of professional soccer players in Chinese Super League matched to hourly stadium temperature at the time of kick-off. We exploit exogenous variation in players’ exposure to temperature due to match scheduling rules that are beyond the control of teams and players. In the short term, we find that temperature has an inverted-U shaped relationship with players’ physical performance, and negative relation with cognitive performance. Our results are robust while considering alternative measures of productivity, air pollution, play style, avoidable behavior and climate adaptation. Using hourly Weibo post frequency and transfer fee statistics, we find that high temperature has adverse impacts on clubs’ social media attention and players’ long term human capital accumulation. Our findings suggest that the temperature has profound impacts for the careers of outdoor workers both in the short- and long-run.
