道统对权威：儒家思想与国家能力的互动

内容提要
国家能力在对当代社会经济和大分流历史的研究中愈发受到重视，中国比西方更早的建立了中央集权的帝国官僚制以取代封建制，但中国的国家能力却自中世起走向衰落，至近代反不如欧洲列强甚至日本，其中原因何在？本文从思想史视角着手分析，而相比于经济史文献中常将儒家思想与国家机器视为“部件”或“盟友”，本文更加注重儒家尊奉的道德/保守主义与支撑帝国官僚制的功利/集权主义的对立。在分别以宋代和明代为背景的实证分析中，本文揭示帝国权威是功利/集权主义的重要推手，且可以用来打压道德/保守主义，但恰恰是帝国国家能力的扩张逼迫地方精英与保守知识分子结成更紧密的联盟，以对抗帝国的经济与思想影响力，并最终将中国推向国家能力弱化的历史道路。
