Outside option and information provision in school choice

内容提要
This paper examines two prominent school choice mechanisms, the deferred acceptance mechanism (DA) and the Boston mechanism (BOS), in a laboratory setting where students have varying access to outside options. We design three treatment conditions: (1) no student has an outside option; (2) some students have outside options, and the distribution of these students is common knowledge; (3) some students have outside options, but the distribution information is unobservable. Our analysis focuses on individual behaviors, welfare, and equality under each mechanism across different treatment conditions. We find that DA outperforms BOS in every dimension across all the treatments. Furthermore, under both DA and BOS, information provision decreases the likelihood of true preference revelation and Nash equilibrium occurrences. In terms of welfare and equality, the performance of DA remains consistent across different information environments. In contrast, under BOS, more information exacerbates inequality levels, while total welfare remains unaffected. Our results suggest that both outside option and related information provision play an important role in school choice mechanism design.
